Building a Sustainable tomorrow

For over 60 years, we’ve been at the centre of shaping Ireland’s national infrastructure and creating many of its most iconic buildings to build a sustainable tomorrow.

At BAM, We recognise our responsibility to help care for our environment and the communities we work in – both today and tomorrow.

We’ve already taken incredible steps toward sustainable construction, but we want to go further and play a leading role in building a sustainable future.  We work in partnership with our clients and supply chain across construction, civil engineering, investment, property development, residential, fit-out, rail and facilities management.

Our integrated services create places that help people and nature flourish.  We support public and private sector clients reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainability over the whole lifecycle of their buildings and infrastructure.

Our purpose is to build a sustainable tomorrow. Our Sustainability Strategy is a clear plan of action to achieve this purpose, with a series of ambitious targets for 2030.

We started by asking ourselves a simple question. How can we make the biggest difference? To find the answer, we looked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGS). By analysing our business against these goals, we’ve defined a clear plan of action based around six themes:

Decarbonisation – Our carbon target – to become net zero in our direct operations by 2030 – puts us at the forefront of the UK and Ireland construction sector. And we’re always looking for ways to reduce our impact and help our clients and supply chains to do the same.

Circularity – We’re striving for zero waste by delivering circular products. When we design a project we consider its entire lifecycle. So instead of ending up in landfill, materials go back into the supply chain, maximising resource efficiency and eliminating waste. By 2030 we will reduce our waste by 75% compared to 2015.

Climate adaptation – We’ll build with climate change in mind, providing our clients with climate-adaptive assets which are resilient against future change. By 2030 we’ll integrate climate adaptive measures into all our projects.

Biodiversity – Healthy ecosystems are more resilient to the changing environment, that’s why we have set a target for BAM to have a positive biodiversity impact by 2030. Our objective is to protect biodiversity, enhance ecosystems and help mitigate the effects of climate change on our communities.

Safety, health and inclusion – We foster safe, healthy and inclusive working and living environments for everyone. Preventing accidents and illness is crucial. But it’s time to create environments that are not just preventative, but proactive. Sustainable environments that enhance people’s lives – today and long into the future.

Social value – The built environment has a big impact on our wellbeing. Our objective is to develop buildings, places and infrastructure that supports environmental, economic and social wellbeing – and enhances people’s lives. By 2026 we’ve committed to delivering a minimum of 35% social value added, across all projects over €10 million.

Sustainability and Supply Chain

Our Supply Chain purpose is ‘To create and maintain ethical and sustainable collaborative relationships with supply chain partners, embracing core BAM values, which generate mutually beneficial outcomes through early engagement and market leading delivery on projects’. To meet our customers’ needs we have a diverse supply chain and in 2024 we worked with approximately 5,000 vendors. This comprises approximately 2,300 suppliers and 1,200 subcontractors.

BAM’s general philosophy is not to spread our spend and resource amongst a large number of companies but to instead focus our efforts on a smaller number of key businesses, ensuring we understand their business and they have the ability and willingness to align their current and future strategy with ours, this is managed through our BAM Link approach; a new agreement with our supply chain partners called BAM Link, which suits a diverse group of businesses.

BAM Link offers a great deal of flexibility and provides for longer or shorter agreements depending on the requirements of the supply chain partner. It also allows for the incorporation of existing agreements already concluded with Royal BAM Group. This approach is designed to have collaboration and alignment to our values as their core element. They are all supported by health and safety, bribery and corruption, modern slavery and other relevant company policies. Early engagement, collaboration and on-going performance measurement are key to this approach.

Why we have become a Partner of the School

Promoting sustainability across BAM’s extensive supply chain, including in facility management, is vital for the sector to ensure Ireland is addressing climate change.
Since much of the work is carried out by smaller organisations, we aim, as a larger business, to support our supply chain and other smaller organisations by sharing our expertise and methodologies, driving continuous improvements and performance across the industry.
This approach ensures alignment with the values of both BAM and our customers.

“"I’m delighted to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and our work with the Supply Chain Sustainability School. This partnership helps us improve our supply chain, build strong relationships, and find solutions that reflect our values. By supporting the school’s training and resources, we’re preparing for the future while making a positive impact."”
